Heinrich von Schwichell - a bell-founder and ancestor of the East Prussian family

In the fall of 1514 Henry enters Schwichel (l / t) Prussian probably the first floor. He comes by ship from the Baltic States. The Livonian Order Master Wolter von Plettenberg reported to the Grand Master Albert of Brandenburg-Ansbach an ordinary caster named after King Henry Berg. The Grand Master has also requested those at once. So Henry comes to Konigsberg.

The reigning since 1511 new Grand Master has bold plans. He will definitely avoid the imminent fealty, the sovereign submission to the Polish crown. So far he has been able to postpone the scheduled appointments with plausible excuses. His uncle, the king of Poland will not leave despite the family ties put off forever. Albrecht's mother is a sister of the Polish King Sigismund. This kinship terms was also a good reason for Albrecht's appeal to the Grand Master's chair. Behind the scenes in all directions diplomatic alliance negotiations to be stepped up to be well prepared for a forthcoming debate. A good caster, the knows his is, of course very welcome. Durable guns that burst is not the same after the first shots can be of vital importance.

Heinrich von Schwichell by the Grand Master put into service for life. To war with Poland, it only comes 1520/21. Until then, there is time to pour some bells. The bell was cast

different, purely technical point of view, but little of the gun manufacturing. The mixing ratio of the metals copper and tin is a little different. Often, bell-founder and guns, or as it was then, cases cast, depending on how the war or peacetime have required it. Bells are stolen in times of war and cast into cannon, and after peace has one of the metal of captured guns again replaced the missing bells. It happens even after the so-called Reiter's war against Poland 1520/21, which ultimately brought heavy losses for both parties and not only the question of power has decided.

Man a preliminary peace agreement for 4 years between Prussia and Poland. In those years, the Grand Master travels a lot around in German lands, to promote his business. One is interested but not particularly for the far Prussia. Luther's ideas generate unrest in the kingdom. The Grand Master meets secretly with him. The Negotiations with the Polish king in Krakow take a surprising turn: 1525 there is a coup. The Grand Master makes the country under his orders a hereditary duchy. He makes fealty to the Polish king. The king can officially announced from Krakow, the Order had forfeited his right to the land because it had not since 1511 considered it necessary to renew the feud. He has exercised his right hand to re-allocation. Prussia became Protestant, and in order to distance himself from the Order and the Pope as the former chief Lord. That may suffice here as a historical background to the creation time of Henry's bells.

The East Prussian Provincial curator Prof. Dr. Richard Deth by 1917 five bells from the hands of Henry of Schwichel (l / t) (Low German also Hinnerik van Swichel / t ) in the country before. They are all classified as historical and musical value and thereby missed the recovery in the defense industry of the 1st World War II: 1515 cooper village, district Bartenstein, 1518 Marienthal, district Rastenburg, in 1521 two bells in Medenau, district Fischhausen, 1522 Thierberg, district Fischhausen. For over 400 years of Henry rang bells in East Prussia and Samland. They have the second World War II, probably not over.

But it has far more bells from this foundry given, but were re-cast over the centuries and are therefore advised in modern times forgotten. By chance finds in town and church chronicles, or in contemporary letters (in the State Archives Berlin), can still find the following evidence: 1515 Gr.Ottenhagen, district Konigsberg; in 1515 Sacred Wood, district Konigsberg, 1517 Gdansk, St.Johannis; 1521 Schippenbeil, district Bartenstein and possibly a bell in Fleming, district Roessel.

Back to Henry: Because the cash-strapped after the war gets rider Heinrich Kreutz in the village Seeben castle in return for his services solely for the use. After 1522, as far as known so far, no bells were more of Henry. Apparently he takes care to ensure the management of his land ownership.

give first customer back in 1535 Archive Documents Heinrich: in October, he receives the permits to settle in Königsberg. 1536 Henry asks his Duke that village to be allowed to sell Seeben, complains about unfaithful servants, the hard rural life and tells of a home purchase in Königsberg. 1542 replaced the King Henry Berger town house to an estate in bucket of lime. The ducal treasurer George Ogelin (today one would say of Finance) was awarded for his services in that character. He took over the property first place, but immediately traded him to Henry's comfortable town house. The bucket of lime Well, located in the southeastern Pregelniederungen Samland (parish of Holy wood), remained for over 300 years of family ownership. Converted to today's mass, a size of something is about 100 hectares. The name of Schwichell "changed" by Schweicheln "it is already in the document of 1542, or later Schweichel Schweichel and in the 18th Century, the name Schweichler , sometimes written Schweigler enforced. "Of" lost at Henry's grandchildren. The son Peter is a master at various bush Prince in the service, took the lead again but at the age of his estate. Caster then no one has become. Mainly contains so-called Cöllmer, free peasants, under the name carriers. But also in administrative offices appeared on the name: for example, as the Conrector samländischen Creissen-Justice Commission around 1780. An organist Schweichler found for example in 1750 in Fischhausen.

The name Schweichler spreads through the centuries everywhere in Samland and all parts of East Prussia. In all of these namesakes Heinrich is suspected of Schwichell as ancestor. One, due to the descent Kalkheimer namesakes married in 1790 in a Krueger family at the Curonian Lagoon one. From about 1800, the pitcher in the small fishing village of Stombeck Schweichler the family is out. 1932, where my mother was born Betty Schweichler . 1948 end of that part of the East Prussian history Schweichler and find this line in 1949 continued in Schleswig-Holstein.

The origin of the ancestor of this family, the bell-founder Hinnerik van Swichel / Heinrich von Schwichell is still in the dark. The name of Schwichel (l / d / t) occurs in the region of Hildesheim. There is a lavishly wealthy since medieval times of knights with the name, which in 1790 in the rank of count is raised. The last male namesakes Count Kurt von Schwicheldt dies 1908th In the traditional genealogies of this family is available in the relevant period, several Heinrichs, fit but not quite all. Furthermore, it seems inconceivable that exerts a scion of that noble pride and castles possessing sex a trade.

By Henry are very idiosyncratic handed bell inscriptions, indicating that perhaps an illegitimate birth. A large, about 1855 poured into Holy wood bell originally carried the following inscription: IN GOD'S PRAISE EVICKLICH * ALL GELAUBIG Sell * I * A comforting BIN CORPORAL HURKINT EIGET ME * MCCCCCXV . From these bells Schippenbeil inscription is preserved: ICK BIN SO FRI AS THE WINTER * DE MI EGHENT DAT IS VAN DE AERDEN HORKINT * Henrick VAN SVICHELT GOS ME * MCCCCCXXI.

Heinrichs professional background suggests an important teacher: Documents of the National Archives show that Henry in 1515 to Kampen in Holland, travels to get his wife to obtain a permanent position to Prussia. Kampen is known at the time a Hanseatic city situated on a tributary to the IJsselmeer, the rain over the sea commerce with Prussia and the Baltic States maintains. She is also the hometown of one of Europe's bell foundry his time: Geert van Wou or master Gherardus de Wou (1450-1527). He made the bells in Osnabrück, Hamburg, Stendal, Lüneburg, Kalkar, Münster, Xanten, Erfurt, Recklinghausen, Braunschweig, Hagen, Westphalia., To name just the most important in today's Germany. Geert van Wou is famous for its perfect sounding harmonious bells. Champion Geert also maintains business relations with Wolter von Plettenberg to Livonia. Around 1501 guns to be delivered there. 1509 has John Schonenborch , a stepson of Geert van Wou in Riga bells cast or supplied. In addition, be many files from the period 1520/30 to the Berlin State Archive news of a Konigsberg merchant Gerd / Gerrit von Wow, a potentially close relatives of the famous founder. So can pretty safely assume that Henry stood with champion Geert van Wou name or a time when it has worked.

I am grateful for any kind of notes or additions to Schweichler family research, as well as church bells and stories regarding Henry of Schwichell. I am happy to answer questions in this context. ViktorHaupt@aol.com
